Jean (Swenson) Breck 1945<\/span><\/p>\r\n Bow WOW!!!<\/strong> \u00a0So much for this dog to see and do on the\u00a0CASCADE SCENIC LOOP <\/strong>with a side trip up the\u00a0MT BAKER SCENIC HIGHWAY<\/strong>\u00a0– Sparkling Rivers, Clear Blue Mountain Lakes, Majestic Mountains, Cascading Waterfalls, Brilliant Fall Colors, Magnificent Views, Delicious Food, \u00a0Fun Hikes, Comfy Lodging, Inspiring Art, so much Beauty…let me tell you, this PawTrip has something for every DOG, and lots to SNIFF!<\/p>\r\n We started our planning with “THE CASCADE LOOP<\/strong><\/a>” brochure and Foldout Driving Map, then researched additional dog friendly things to do along our route using TripAdvisor, Pinterest, AllTrails, WTA, requesting information from the various Visitor’s Centers and Chambers, looking at the Scenic Washington State 365 Scenic Drives Road Map, as well as collecting additional information from people we met, and the various Ranger Stations we visited along the way.<\/p>\r\n Each of our 7 -days the last week in September 2018 were packed with adventure and unexpected surprises, what we like to call “MAGIC LOOT<\/strong>,” from morning until night.<\/p>\r\n The paw prints on the Cascade Scenic Loop Map below indicate the places we stopped traveling counter clockwise, starting in Everett, WA looping to Concrete, WA with a side trip up the Mt. Baker Scenic Hwy, ending in Bellingham, WA for our last night\u2019s stay before heading back to Portland.<\/p>\r\n CASCADE LOOP MAP<\/strong><\/p>\r\n DAY 1 \u00a0SUNDAY – PORTLAND, OR to EVERETT, WA<\/strong><\/p>\r\n We left Portland, Oregon late morning, and checked into the LA QUINTA EVERETT<\/strong><\/a> late afternoon. This was our first stay at a La Quinta and we were impressed with the affordable room rate, and no additional pet fee (this has since changed!) \u00a0It was also a great location to visit our Aunt in Woodinville and make a fresh start the next day on the CASCADE SCENIC LOOP!<\/p>\r\n DAY 2 \u00a0MONDAY – EVERETT to LEAVENWORTH<\/strong><\/p>\r\n And, we’re off on our Adventure along Hwy 2 heading east on the Cascade Scenic Loop… windows rolled down, following the Skykomish River!<\/p>\r\n The photo below was taken just past the town of Monroe…Mountains on the Horizon!<\/p>\r\n A short drive further, and we see the “CASCADE LOOP SCENIC HIGHWAY\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0sign and pull over for a picture of yours truly. \u00a0We’re on the right track!<\/p>\r\n An hour\u2019s drive from Everett, with a left turn off Hwy 2, another mile, across the Bridge and we are in the town of INDEX<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n See\u00a0MT INDEX<\/strong> towering above the SKYKOMISH RIVER<\/strong>\u00a0. \u00a0For this photo we took a \u00a0left once we crossed the bridge.<\/p>\r\n Then back to Hwy 2, continuing east a short ways to the\u00a0ESPRESSO CHALET<\/strong>\u00a0on the right at MP36. \u00a0I love this Stop! \u00a0Eggnog Latte for Carole, Bigfoot, View of Bridal Veil Falls from the Chalet back deck, and BigFoot Park, Oh My! \u00a0According to a local, they have Eggnog Latte’s all year round. \u00a0Of course I’ll have to take Carole’s word for it. \u00a0She say’s it’s the creamiest!<\/p>\r\n Pictured below is the view of BRIDAL VEIL FALLS<\/strong> from the back deck of the Espresso Chalet (see photo on right. \u00a0In the center notice a faint vertical line just above the trees in the foreground, that’s Bridal Veil Falls) . And, Big Foot Park with a Pet Area just for me! “I spy with my little eye, another Bigfoot\u201d (as seen in “Harry and the Henderson’s,\u201d) and family of deer munching berries!” in the Park. Just a few miles east of the Espresso Chalet and we pull over at the EAGLE FALLS<\/strong><\/a> turnout on the right near MP39. \u00a0(Note: There is not a sign. There is however a kiosk and garbage cans on the other side of the guardrail at this turnout)<\/p>\r\n To see the Falls it requires I Limbo under the guardrail while Carole steps over, then walking down a short dirt path, scrambling over downed logs, and around boulders (Carole was impressed with my agility,) and finally climbing out onto rock slabs where we look upstream and are able to see the lovely Eagle Falls illuminated by the morning sun; a 25′-40′ Cascade.<\/p>\r\n Next stop, the SKYKOMISH RANGER STATION<\/strong><\/a> on the left, approximately a 15 minute drive. We check in with the Ranger on a couple of stops we plan to make, and ask about bears (this gets a grin. \u00a0“None reported.”) \u00a0He also gives us a great map with local hikes as well as directions to DECEPTION FALLS<\/strong>, a 10 minute drive away on the left near MP56. \u00a0Note: There is great road Signage for this stop.<\/p>\r\n When we arrive at\u00a0DECEPTION FALLS<\/strong><\/a>, there aren’t many cars in the parking lot.<\/p>\r\n I love walking along this forested .75 mile loop trail taking stairs, crossing bridges, walking out onto overlooks, and seeing the different waterfalls. \u00a0We do this hike clockwise and are glad we did, starting with the smaller of the waterfalls and working our way to the more dramatic. \u00a0This is a Dog Friendly hike. No Parking Fee or permit Required.<\/p>\r\n Deception Falls Nature Trail below<\/p>\r\n And Along the Trail<\/p>\r\n From Deception Falls we head east over\u00a0STEVEN’S PASS<\/strong> and BOW WOWZA,<\/strong>\u00a0our first view of Fall color, “Hear me Howl, Fall has arrived in the Cascades!”<\/p>\r\n We have to stop at the “can’t miss”\u00a0<\/span>59er DINER<\/strong><\/a> on the right<\/span>\u00a0for a Blackberry Milkshake, Yum! \u00a0(At least that\u2019s what Carole said) Dogs are welcome at their outside picnic tables.<\/span><\/p>\r\n …Then continue through\u00a0TUMWATER CANYON<\/strong>…(where we are starting to notice the drier climate)<\/span><\/p>\r\n … and into LEAVENWORTH<\/strong>, a Bavarian themed town at the foot of the Cascades. OOM<\/b>–PAW<\/b>!<\/p>\r\n Our first stop in Leavenworth is the LEAVENWORTH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE<\/strong> <\/a>\u00a0where we pick up an ARTWALK<\/strong> Map for the nearby\u00a0SLEEPING LADY MOUNTAIN RESORT<\/a> (NOTE: Sleeping Lady also has dog friendly lodging and each of the three dining patios at their Kingfisher Restaurant & Wine Bar, The Grotto and O’Grady’s are dog friendly)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n Then, a short 10 minute drive from town along Icicle Creek Road and we are at the Resort.<\/p>\r\n Below are some of the sculptures we see on our Artwalk: Chihuly Icicles, Soul Salmon, Fountain of Dreams, Shaman Salmon, and the Emissaries (Ravens.) The Art Walk is Dog Friendly. \u00a0No Parking Fee.<\/p>\r\n Note: \u00a0Icicle Creek Road is also the location of several Dog friendly hikes where a Northwest Forest Pass is Required.<\/p>\r\n A quote from the Art Walk Brochure –<\/p>\r\n “There is a human need for beauty – to see, hear and feel\u00a0what is already offered by nature. \u00a0The only enhancement that humans can add is art.” It is now time to check into our hotel for the night at the\u00a0HOWARD JOHNSON’S by<\/strong> Wyndham<\/strong><\/a> located at the west end of town on Hwy 2.<\/p>\r\n Lucky Dog, they greet me with a ziplock bag of treats, a waste bag, the visitor’s map below, and list of pet friendly restaurants. \u00a0They sure know how to welcome a dog! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Here is the great 3-D map \u00a0(LEAVENWORTH VISITOR’S MAP<\/a>) <\/strong>that was given to us at the hotel and includes blue paw prints at all the pet friendly lodging and restaurants. Carole has also added her own Orange Paw Print stickers on the map to show the places we visited.<\/p>\r\n After we get settled, we walk the several blocks into the Village (Front Street,) first stopping for Gingerbread Dog treats at the <\/span>GINGERBREAD FACTORY<\/strong><\/a>, followed by dinner at the dog friendly,\u00a0<\/span>MUCHEN HAUS<\/a><\/strong>! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Note: \u00a0We were here on a Monday before Oktoberfest, so it wasn\u2019t busy at all.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The collage of photos below includes: a photo from Hwy 2 in Leavenworth looking back west to where we’d come from over Stevens Pass and through Tumwater Canyon; \u00a0Also, a photo of the resident goat from our walk along Hwy 2 to Front Street; and one of Front Street, the Village.<\/p>\r\n I have to say, Leavenworth is both a very walkable and Dog Friendly town! They even put out bowls of water all along the sidewalk for dogs in case we get thirsty.<\/p>\r\n Below, the GINGERBREAD FACTORY on Front Street. \u00a0Treats for Cody!…..Waiting Patiently!<\/p>\r\n And Dinner at the Dog Friendly MUCHEN HAUS on Front Street with Veggie Sausage (yes they have a Veggie Sausage) and Beer for Carole!<\/p>\r\n By the end of the day, we have walked 4.6 miles and climbed the equivalent of 16 floors…not bad for the Cody Dog!<\/p>\r\n DAY 3 \u00a0TUESDAY – LEAVENWORTH to MANSON with stops in WENATCHEE and ENTIAT<\/strong><\/p>\r\n Another sunny day! \u00a0After grabbing some fruit from the hotel breakfast room, and packing up the car, we head out for a 2-mile walk around\u00a0ENCHANTMENT PARK & BLACKBIRD ISLAND<\/strong>, a Nature area along the Wenatchee River, located just a couple of blocks from our Hotel.<\/p>\r\n Armed with Airhorn and Bear spray with no other walkers in sight, Carole talks to me as she was instructed to do…(FYI, we were also told not to venture out on the trails at dawn or dusk when wildlife are the most active.) \u00a0Good news, no bears (ha! ha!) \u00a0We do eventually run into a few other people out walking, and in particular, one local woman with her family who tells us she had heard growling once in the bushes, and ever since has worn a whistle around her neck.<\/p>\r\n Here are some photos from our morning walk around\u00a0ENCHANTMENT PARK & BLACKBIRD ISLAND in Leavenworth.<\/p>\r\n On the road again, we continue along Hwy 2 and the Wenatchee River, past fruit stands and wineries, watching the scenery change\u00a0to rolling brown hillsides.. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n In just a little over 1\/2 hour, a sign Welcoms us to the “Apple Capital of the World” and we are in WENATCHEE<\/strong> where we make a beeline to the <\/span>WENATCHEE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE <\/strong><\/a>in Old Town for\u00a0an “<\/span>ART ON THE AVENUES WALKING TOURS<\/strong><\/a>” Map and directions to RIVERFRONT PARK<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n From Old Town, we head \u00a0the short distance down to the Columbia River and Riverfront Park, passing through an industrial area, taking a left at the bottom of the hill and driving along the Park to a parking lot on the right (no fee) where we begin our 1\/2 mile walk.<\/span><\/p>\r\n “MAGIC LOOT!<\/strong>,” as we walk along the river enjoying the sculptures, (there are over 32 pieces of art in Riverfront Park,) we see children spread out across the lawn in groups creating sculptures from different natural elements….We are Curious!<\/p>\r\n And, As we stand watching, one of the volunteers walks up and hands us the “In case you’re wondering” explanation sheet below.<\/p>\r\n We want to mention here, that Riverfront Park is part of the larger 10 mile multi-use Apple Capital Loop Trail.<\/p>\r\n Time for lunch, so across the River to East Wenatchee we go to the Dog Friendly LISA<\/b> BEE\u2019S<\/b><\/a> restaurant; a good suggestion from the Wenatchee Chamber. \u00a0Lisa Bee’s even gave me a “Pup Cup,” a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and as you can see from the picture below, I’m diggin’ it!<\/p>\r\n After lunch we backtrack to get on Hwy 97, and head North along the Columbia River for about a 1\/2 hour to\u00a0ENTIAT,<\/strong>\u00a0where we stop in for a nice visit with the local Ranger at the ENTIAT RANGER’S DISTRICT<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0She tells us about NUMERAL MOUNTAIN<\/strong> where graduating classes have been climbing since the 1920’s commemorating their class by painting their graduating year on the mountainside. \u00a0And, also suggests a stop at BOX CANYON,\u00a0<\/strong>in addition to the other stops we have planned.<\/p>\r\n So, off we go along the ENTIAT RIVER<\/strong> and Entiat River Road driving into the WENATCHEE NATIONAL FOREST..<\/p>\r\n It’s not long before we see another car pulled over to the right, so we pull over too, and see an unnamed waterfall that seems to shoot out of the hillside. (We decided to name it \u201cHOTSHOT<\/strong>\u201d after the fire fighters who battled the recent wildfires in the area.) … And, that was the only other car we saw on our drive.<\/p>\r\n A little further up the road, and there is a sign for “BOX CANYON,<\/strong>” at MP3.2. \u00a0We pull over to our left and walk the short distance downhill to a fenced overlook for a view of the Canyon and FISHTAIL FALLS<\/strong><\/p>\r\n Next on our left, we pull out once again into a paved parking lot across the street from\u00a0SILVER FALLS\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0<\/strong>MP5.<\/strong>\u00a0 Since we are alone, we decide to just take a picture of the Falls from the parking lot, rather than hike the trail up to the Falls. (the ranger had mentioned cougar in the area due to the recent wildfires.)<\/p>\r\n As we drive the next 3 miles to ENTIAT FALLS<\/strong>\u00a0at MP8, the landscape changes dramatically from green forest and paved road, to a gravel road through the devastation of the recent wildfire. \u00a0It was an eerie sight to see the sharp contrast of the white water against a backdrop of blackened charred trees.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n From the town of Entiat we have driven approximately 34 miles, for an estimated 1-1\/2 hrs, not including stops, to our furthest point, ENTIAT FALLS.<\/p>\r\n Note: All the stops we made in the WENATCHEE NATIONAL FOREST are dog friendly. \u00a0NW Forest Pass Required.<\/p>\r\n Hwy 97 North along Columbia River to Entiat<\/p>\r\n Shown below, Numeral Mountain at the start of our drive; Entiat River road; and the waterfall by the side of the road we called “HotShot.”<\/p>\r\n Box Canyon and Fishtail Falls Silver Falls and Entiat Falls By now, it’s getting late in the afternoon but we want to make one last stop at the dog-friendly\u00a0FOUR LAKES WINERY<\/strong><\/a> in MANSON<\/strong> before turning in for the\u00a0day.<\/strong>\u00a0 So we highTAIL it to MANSON<\/strong>, about a 40 minute drive from Entiat (with one quick stop for gas first, since we were almost on empty. \u00a0Note to Carole, next time get gas in Wenatchee!)<\/p>\r\n And, Guess What?\u2026We make it with time to spare! \u00a0The Tasting Room Manager at Four Lakes Winery\u00a0is very nice and tells Carole it’s ok to let me wander around the Tasting Room while she tastes! \u00a0So, of course, I make myself at home!<\/p>\r\n We had planned to visit two additional wineries, (note: there are a lot of dog friendly wineries in Chelan and Manson,)\u00a0and there is still time, but we’ve had a long day, so instead decide to head to our night’s lodging at the MOUNTAIN VIEW LODGE<\/strong><\/a>, a 10 minute drive from the winery.<\/p>\r\n The Mountain View Lodge greets me with a Doggie Swag Bag containing treats, waste bags, a towel, winery brochure\u00a0(click here for MANSON WINERIES,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0noting dog friendly wineries,) and a Manson Loop Driving Tour Map. \u00a0Happy Dog!<\/p>\r\n Our room has sort of a retro vibe, which makes my Tail Wag!<\/p>\r\n By the end of this day, we have walked a total of 4.2 miles and climbed the equivalent of 4 floors. \u201cGo Cody Dog, Go!\u201d<\/p>\r\n DAY 4 \u00a0WEDNESDAY – MANSON to MAZAMA with stop in WINTHROP\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n Today we celebrate what would have been Carole’s\u00a0<\/strong>mom’s, Jean’s, 100th Birthday!<\/strong><\/p>\r\n We’re Up early and take a picture of the moon.<\/p>\r\n Then pack up the car and head for breakfast at the Dog Friendly, Award-winning\u00a0BLUEBERRY HILLS RESTAURANT<\/strong><\/a> in the country, a 6 minute drive from our motel.<\/p>\r\n Morning Moon<\/p>\r\n Photos below of BLUEBERRY HILLS RESTAURANT with their wonderful covered dog-friendly back deck overlooking fields of blueberries.<\/p>\r\n After breakfast we drive the short Manson Loop taking in views of Upper Lake Chelan, apple orchards, and Wapato and Rose Lakes, before heading into the town of Chelan.<\/p>\r\n View of Upper Lake Chelan from the Loop Drive<\/p>\r\n Apple Orchards<\/p>\r\n We want to do the 1-mile CHELAN RIVERWALK<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0this morning, but are not quite sure where we are going, when, BINGO, just a few miles from Manson, we stumble onto Woodin Street in downtown CHELAN,<\/strong>\u00a0and there is the \u00a0“Chelan Riverwalk Park.” sign.<\/p>\r\n And, we follow the sidewalk to our right, go across one bridge (under construction,) walking along the water on one side, then crossing another bridge, heading back along the other side…It is a lovely walk, the water a beautiful shade of blue, and so crystal clear!<\/p>\r\n Dog friendly Walk. \u00a0Downtown Parking no fee with a \u00a03 hour limit<\/p>\r\n From Chelan we begin our \u00a02-hour drive to\u00a0MAZAMA<\/strong>, taking\u00a0Hwy 97 North along the Columbia River until a “CASCADE SCENIC LOOP<\/strong>” sign directs us through the METHOW VALLEY<\/strong>, and along the METHOW RIVER<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n In WINTHROP We stop at the METHOW VALLEY RANGER DISTRICT<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 for additional information and \u00a0NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK MAP<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0As you’ll see below, I am having a fun time visiting with the Rangers!<\/p>\r\n Note: The Ranger’s Station also has a list of other Dog Friendly hikes in the area.<\/p>\r\n Then we’re back on the road to Mazama to meet a young man, who has agreed to drive us up\u00a0 HARTS PASS to SLATE PEAK\u00a0<\/strong>this afternoon, the highest drive in Washington State – \u00a0A road we want to take, but Carole \u00a0is too timid to drive, after reading the harrowing accounts of other travelers.<\/p>\r\n Lucky for us, our friend turns out not only to be great company, but also a skilled driver, navigating the narrow road, sheer drop offs, gravel, rock wash, chuckholes and other cars, safely getting us to the top and back without incident.<\/p>\r\n Once we reach the end of the road at the Slate Peak Parking Lot, it’s only a .5 mile hike up to the 7,488′ Peak.<\/p>\r\n As our Mom liked to say “I’m sitting on top of the world” \u00a0And we are doing just that Celebrating Jean’s 100th Birthday\u00a0with a breathtaking 360 degree view of all the surrounding mountains on this glorious Fall day.<\/p>\r\n And, as we walk back down to our car, more \u00a0“MAGIC LOOT<\/strong>,” and “icing on the cake,” when 3 ravens fly to where we had been, soon joined by a fourth, all doing aerobatics, rolling and diving, as they soared in the sky above.<\/p>\r\n Dogs allowed on Slate Peak. It\u2019s a Great day to be a Cody Dog!<\/p>\r\n Tonight’s lodging is a Cozy, Dog-Friendly Cabin on Early Winter’s Creek at the rustic FREESTONE INN<\/strong><\/a> in Mazama. We LOVE<\/strong> this place!<\/p>\r\n After our drive up Hart’s Pass we don’t want the day to end, so we decide to continue Mom’s birthday celebration by taking a short walk from our cabin to JACK’S HUT PIZZA,<\/strong> where we eat dinner at one of their outdoor Picnic Tables in front of the restaurant, toasting Jean’s 100th birthday with a Guinness (mom’s favorite beer) to what has been a most amazing day!<\/p>\r\n Today we walked 5 miles and climbed the equivalent of 16 floors. \u00a0Who\u2019s the Cody Dog now?<\/p>\r\n DAY 5 \u00a0THURSDAY – MAZAMA to CONCRETE\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n Then, we drive over to the Lodge for their wonderful breakfast buffet (breakfast was included with our stay)… which we eat on their dog friendly patio.<\/p>\r\n Below, Early Winters Creek behind our cabin at the Freestone Inn.<\/p>\r\n Pictured below is the Freestone Inn Dog Friendly Patio on Freestone Lake (at registration we are told there is a swimming hole for dogs on the lake. \u00a0And the map shows a .4 mile lake trail. \u00a0Next time.)<\/p>\r\n After breakfast we head for the \u00a0MAZAMA STORE<\/strong> <\/a>and last gas stop, before our drive across the North Cascades. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n Carole also buys a salted baguette at the recommendation of our young friend from yesterday’s adventure, who said the locals refer to it as “Crack Bread” (because it’s so addicting,) and store menu calls a Fleur de Sel!…It definitely lived up to it’s reputation!<\/p>\r\n The store also sells pastries, sandwiches, beverages, etc. and has a dog-friendly patio.<\/p>\r\n North Cascades here we come!<\/p>\r\n Our first stop along the North Cascades Scenic Highway is the WASHINGTON PASS OVERLOOK<\/strong> on the right at MP162. \u00a0Great stop! \u00a0 Large paved parking lot and restrooms. \u00a0Here, we take the .2 mile, mostly paved, scenic loop walk stopping for jaw dropping views of Liberty Bell and Early Winter Spires .<\/p>\r\n And, at one of the viewpoints, \u201cMAGIC LOOT,<\/strong>\u201d when we see the Framed Poem, “Silver Star,” by the late celebrated Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford!<\/p>\r\n Next stop,\u00a0RAINY PASS <\/strong>at\u00a0<\/strong>MP 157.6 exit on the left. A very busy dirt parking area and jumping off point for several dog friendly trails of varying lengths and difficulties, including: LAKE ANN, HEATHER PASS AND MAPLE PASS LOOP, and our pick of the day, \u00a0RAINY LAKE HIKE<\/strong><\/a>, a 2 mile out and back, relatively flat interpretive walk to the crystalline RAINY LAKE.<\/p>\r\n These trails are all Dog Friendly. \u00a0Fee or Northwest Forest Pass Required.<\/p>\r\n Soon after, we enter the\u00a0ROSS LAKE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA,<\/strong>\u00a0and with windows rolled down, can hear and see any number of waterfalls as we drive along this stretch of road.<\/p>\r\n We almost miss the Two unmarked ROSS LAKE <\/strong>viewpoints (turnouts,) one after the other, on the right at MP135, \u00a0but manage to quickly pull over for a Birdseye View and snapshot of\u00a0Ross Lake\u00a0from above. At MP132 on the right we see the sign for the\u00a0DIABLO LAKE OVERLOOK.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This is a popular stop with lots of people, Paved Parking, Restrooms, Picnic tables (Time for our picnic lunch!) and numerous vantage points to capture the beauty and enjoy this glimmering lake reservoir in the afternoon sun.<\/p>\r\n Dog Friendly. No Parking Permit Required. A quick stop at GORGE CREEK FALLS<\/strong>\u00a0at MP123.4 (Parking is on the left on either side of the bridge..a small sign at the bridge reads Gorge Creek)…long enough for Carole to jump out and take a \u00a0Photo from the bridge while I stay in the car.<\/p>\r\n Then onward to hike up\u00a0LADDER CREEK FALLS.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 As we enter NEWHALEM, we take a left on the road just past the Powerhouse, parking at a gravel turnout immediately on the left. \u00a0From here we\u00a0walk across the suspension bridge, over the SKAGIT RIVER,<\/strong> and follow signs .4 miles up a series of stairs and dirt trails along this tiered Falls, then back. (Note: \u00a0According to the Park Ranger all the Newhalem Trails are dog friendly. \u00a0No permit required for parking)<\/p>\r\n Dog Friendly. \u00a0No permit or fee<\/p>\r\n Once back on Hwy 20 west, roadside signs on our right invite us to stop for “Berries,” “Homemade Ice Cream,” “Espresso,” and “Quality Snacks” at the CASCADIAN FARMS STORE. \u00a0<\/strong>And I ask you,\u00a0what dog can resist the temptation of a Snack? So we stop! \u00a0And, even though it is late in the afternoon, Pumpkin Ice Cream for Carol,e and a scoop of Vanilla for me. (Carole said it was the Best Pumpkin Ice Cream she’s ever had! And I loved my scoop of vanilla too!)<\/p>\r\n They also have outdoor dog friendly picnic tables.<\/p>\r\n As our day is coming to an end, we follow the sparkling waters of the SKAGIT RIVER<\/strong> to the town of CONCRETE<\/strong>… …taking a left onto Sauk Valley Road, just past the city center, driving over the bridge across the River and through the countryside for 3 miles to\u00a0OVENELL’S HERITAGE INN<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(cattle ranch) on the right, and tonight’s lodging.<\/p>\r\n Carole checks in for us at the Main house and is treated to a view of Mt. Baker from the large picture windows in the Livingroom. \u00a0Then with map in hand, we drive back down the nicely landscaped driveway, across the road, and down a gravel road between fenced pastures, to the “Cabin Complex,\u201d and our dog friendly log cabin.<\/p>\r\n The map they gave us also showed several nearby walks we could take on the property, but I was ready to put my paws up for the day..<\/p>\r\n I almost forgot to mention we walked 4.4 miles and climbed 11 floors today! \u00a0What do you know about that?<\/p>\r\n DAY<\/b> 6<\/b>\u00a0 FRIDAY –<\/strong>\u00a0CONCRETE<\/b> to<\/b> MT.<\/b> BAKER<\/b>\u00a0 SCENIC<\/b>\u00a0HIGHWAY<\/b>\u00a0to<\/b> BELLINGHAM<\/b><\/p>\r\n MT BAKER SCENIC HWY<\/strong> here we come! \u00a0Another sunny day! \u00a0Pack \u2018em up, MOOOve \u2018em out, “RAWHIDE!” (Couldn’t resist the Cattle reference!)<\/p>\r\n Back to Hwy 20 West and SEDRO WOOLEY<\/strong> for gas, then North on Hwy 9 to the the MT BAKER SCENIC HWY<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n Our first stop along the Hwy is the\u00a0MT BAKER FOOTHILLS CHAMBER AND VISITOR’S CENTER<\/strong><\/a> for maps and information.<\/p>\r\n A walk across the road, down a short unmarked dirt trail and we reach an Overlook for a view of NOOKSACK FALLS<\/strong>. No Permit Required.<\/p>\r\n Back to the Scenic Highway, and it isn’t long before we come across a small unnamed mountain lake, where we pull over into a parking area on the right. \u00a0This is a great stop<\/p>\r\n Then we drive on, around the corner, and BOW WOWZA,<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0MAGIC LOOT<\/strong>..A stunning view of MT. SHUKSAN, fall color, and clouds, all reflected in PICTURE LAKE <\/b>at MP55<\/p>\r\n We can’t resist taking the 1\/2 mile dog friendly walk around PICTURE LAKE<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0where we find ourselves bathing in Fall color and overwhelmed by the beauty of our surroundings!<\/p>\r\n Parking at Picture Lake was anywhere on the left where there was a spot on the road.<\/p>\r\n Back in the car, and as we are making our final ascent to Artist’s Point, we see a large turnout\/viewpoint on our right and have to stop for a picture of the mountains. \u00a0Then more\u00a0MAGIC LOOT<\/strong>, when we see a young man with his violin on a distant mound, and my ears perk up as he begins to play…Goosebumps!<\/p>\r\n Yes indeed, we are lucky to find a parking spot in this already packed lot! \u00a0<\/p>\r\n Then off we go on the \u00a0ARTIST’S RIDGE TRAIL<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 navigating the varied terrain – boulders, stairs, and lakes, all while enjoying the magnificent views on this Popular 2 mile out and back hike.<\/p>\r\n Northwest Forest Pass Required.<\/p>\r\n we are now famished (it’s around 3 p.m.) And, To quote Pooh Bear,” I think it’s time for a little something” said Cody, so we head back down the hwy to the AUSTIN PASS PICNIC AREA\u00a0<\/strong>at MP56, a short drive from Artist’s Point.<\/p>\r\n Northwest Forest Pass required. From the AUSTIN PASS PICNIC AREA it is an 1-1\/2 hour drive to our final night’s lodging at the LA QUINTA BELLINGHAM,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 where we end another perfect day; and, what has been a feast for all the senses; with an Amazing Sunset from our 3rd floor room.<\/p>\r\n Great affordable hotel with no pet fee (this has since changed!)<\/p>\r\n Today we walked\u00a03.6 miles and climbed the equivalent of 11 floors!
