DOG FRIENDLY THOUSAND ACRES PARK

Spread the love

My Mission and the CODY Dog happily chooses to accept it,  THOUSAND ACRES PARK, also known as the Sandy River Delta, a multi-use park with acres of off-leash trails and areas; the perfect place to cool off in the river on a HOT day!

Note:  Located in Troutdale, Oregon, the Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, Thousand Acres Park is about a 20 minute drive east on I-84 from Portland, Exit 18.

We had never been to this Park and were eager to see what all of the Dogs were barking about.

It was too hot to explore, so we took what looked like the most direct route to the river, following the other dogs we’d seen disappear from the parking lot (there is not a lot of signage and the map in parking lot was hard to read,) Fortunately, we took the right trail which turned out to be a 1.25 mile walk on gravel in the blazing sun, we’re pretty sure this was the Confluence Trail.  Note:  While most of the park is off-leash, the Confluence Trail and Parking Lot areas are Leash only.

When we finally reached the sandy bank of the river, it was nice to see there weren’t too many other dogs on this weekday morning.  And, after our hot walk, this CODY Dog didn’t waste any time getting in the water, walking out on the shallow sandy bottom.  I also got a little thirsty and managed to sneak a drink of river water before Carole could stop me! (Good thing my vaccines are all up-to-date)

After my dip in the Sandy River (aptly named I might add,) back we walked the 1.25 mile to the parking lot, again in the pelting sun.

By this time we were ready for some lunch, so we headed to  THE EDGEFIELD LOADING DOCK GRILL (outside patio at Power Station Pub,) just a short drive away.

Note, they have a great patio covered with all sorts of umbrellas, which made it a very cool and inviting lunch spot, especially on such a hot day.  We also had a nice waiter who brought me a bowl of water which I eagerly lapped up.

I had had doggy visions of running off-leash through fields of grasses, the wind blowing through my fur, but it was not to be on this visit.

However, after we got home, and Carole talked to several of our neighbors who have taken their Dogs to this Park, we decided we need to go back when it’s cooler and check out some of the other off-leash trails and areas. So, Stay Tuned!

Note:  As we were driving to Edgefield, we saw people taking their dogs to the Sandy River from Lewis & Clark State Park.  Another Possible swimming hole for the Cody Dog?
